The Public, the Park, and the Process. A public forum on the potential sale of city plaza park land to the Grove Park Inn for highrise development. The League has advocated for more public input, and offers this forum as an opportunity for members of the public to pose their own questions to a panel representing various sides in this issue. Confirmed panelists include:

Craig Madison, president/CEO, Grove Park Inn; Carol King, president, Pack Square Conservancy; Bill Wescott, president, Preservation Society of Asheville-Buncombe County; Barry Summers, spokesperson, People Advocating for Real Conservancy (PARC); James Geter, president, Eagle/Market Streets Development Corp; Billie Buie, citizen participant, 2025 Plan; Doug Campbell, architect; Jan Schochet, formerly with Save Downtown Asheville; Scott Shuford, City Planning Director; Bob Oast, City Attorney

DISPLAYS of various plans involving the park will be available from 7-7:30 PM. The panel will speak at 7:30, after which the meeting will be open for questions from the audience. Moderator is Dr. Maxine Dalton of the Center for Creative Leadership, Greensboro.

Counting the Votes: Electronic Elections. The League hosts two guests at our Brown Bag Series, to discuss the national issues concerning electronic voting, and to gather details about the electronic voting process here in Buncombe County. Speaking to the national issues will be Cecil Bothwell, managing editor of the Mountain Xpress and syndicated columnist. Trena Parker, director of the Buncombe County Board of Elections, will then discuss this county's particular voting machines and their features. A discussion featuring panelists Bruce Elmore, Atty., and Christiana Glenn Tugman, citizen-advocate, on the USA PATRIOT Act; Frank Goldsmith, Atty., on the laws of war; with Professor Mark Gibney moderating. Sponsored by the WNC Chapter of the ACLU; free to the public.
Monday, November 17, 2003 7:30-9am TBA Changing Demographics and Public Policy. As a post-election wrap-up, this first "Emerging Issues" breakfast meeting will look at our region's changing demographics and how public policy will either be affected or need to be affected. Professor Bill Sabo from the University of North Carolina at Asheville is our guest speaker, addressing the potential political challenges and consequences of these changes in our midst.
Monday, March 15, 2004 12 Noon YWCA Public Access Television--A Community Asset Still Waiting in the Wings. Join the League for an up-to-the minute report on the status of the long-awaited public access television station for the City and County. Find out what has delayed this promising community asset, and what you can do to speed its advent. Speaker will be Beth Lazer, who chaired the former Public Access Television Commission and currently chairs URTV, Inc., the non-profit organization seeking to bring public access to fruition. Greg Lucas, executive director of the Media Arts Project, will also speak briefly about his organization's role in collaboration with URTV. You need to hear this report! Public hearing on budget & funding for Regional Water Authority. The questions before the Authority include how our infrastructure is maintained and the equity of current rates and proposed maintenance fees (per residential and commercial hookup). Our League has monitored the Water Authority situation for several years, and holds the position that the Authority should be an independent regional entity. 8-9 p.m.: A one-hour moderated forum with brief introductions, questions from the audience and closing statements from each candidate. This forum is co-sponsored by the Renaissance Asheville Hotel.

Blue Ridge Parkway Plans. An information and discussion meeting about the Blue Ridge Parkway plans with Greg Kidd, Associate S.E. Regional Director with the National Parks Conservation Association. At this brown bag lulnch, Greg will explain the General Management Plan which the Parkway will use for the next 10-20 years to guide their decisions. This event is free and open to the public.
